Self-Care in a Jar

My sister, Nic, shared this Beeswax Body Balm recipe with me many years ago and I still make it regularly because it’s such a nourishing and sensuous way to anoint my body and hydrate my skin.

It’s quick and simple to make, with cost-effective and readily available ingredients.

The texture is decadent and unctuous.

A little goes a long way and it will last for around 6 months.

Beeswax Body Balm

Ingredients:

½ cup almond or olive oil (or use a combination of both)

¼ cup coconut oil

20 grams beeswax – I grate mine for faster melting time

Opt: 1 tsp vitamin oil

Opt: 2 tbsp shea or cocoa butter

6-10 drops of your favourite essential oils (or less if you prefer)

You’ll also need a large 4-cup glass measuring cup with a handle

Method:

Mix all ingredients (except the essential oils) in the large glass measuring cup.

Fill a large saucepan with enough water so that when you place the glass measuring cup in the saucepan the water comes about half-way up the side of the measuring cup. Place the saucepan over a medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer.

Put the measuring cup into the simmering water and stir until ingredients are completely melted.

Remove from heat, add essential oils, and stir to combine.

Transfer the balm to a clean jar – it starts to solidify quickly so best not to delay this part of the process.

Essential oils come with their own particular therapeutic properties.

Benefits:

The oils and butters contain vitamins A and E, healthy fats, and anti-oxidants to nourish, hydrate, soften, and protect your skin. Beeswax locks in moisture, helps keep the skin firm and smooth, and contains anti-inflammatory properties to soothe dry and irritated skin. Essential oils come with their own particular therapeutic properties. And last but not least, getting your own hands on your own body soothes your nervous system and improves your immunity.
